Every melanocyte contains:
- melanosomes (pigment factories)
- tyrosinase (the enzyme that begins pigment formation)
- MITF (the master gene controlling pigment)
- dendrites (branches that deliver pigment to surrounding skin cells)
Melanin formation steps:
- UV, heat, hormones or inflammation send a “danger” signal
- MITF activates
- Tyrosinase switches on
- Melanin begins forming inside the melanosome
- The melanocyte exports melanin into surrounding skin cells
- Pigment becomes visible on the surface
